I just wanted to put in a good word for the local MoTH-owned business "The Family Room" on 8th St. We just had a birthday party there for my 5 yr old and some of her school chums. The kids had a great time; the parents were able to relax and enjoy themselves; and most of all, the whole thing was very easy for me! If you are not familiar with The Family Room, check out their web site at thefamilyroomdc.com . A great place to take your kids to play! And a great place to have a party!! Kati
Hey all
I've been meaning to post about this forever .. we had a great experience having a 3rd birthday party for Nina and her BFF Augie at the Family Room last month! For those of u who have not been, they are on 8th street, located above Popeye's. They have a great big play area for kids and a back party room. You can have the Family room do as much or little as u want. In our case, we were overjoyed to allow them to set up the tables and decorate the room! It looked super cute. We brought the cake, beverages, and ordered pizza from pizza boli's downstairs. They were not at all fazed with the order for 14 pizzas! the kids had a blast; it was great for them to have the big play area to run around in. The party room was ample size for our big group (about 14 kids or more I think - plus almost twice as many adults)! Best of all no clean up. It was really nice and totally stress free - I highly recommend!!

Priceless Asset for Families
We had our 4-year-old's birthday party at the Family Room and it was a big hit. The children got to run around and play (safely) while the parents watched or hung out in the private party room having conversations with other grown-ups. What a treat for everyone!! My wife and I opted for the full party package (food, decorations, cake, gift-bags, craft activity, set-up, and clean-up). What a relief to have a stress-free party! We all showed up (20 child guests plus parents) partied and played for two hours. At the end of the party we walked out very impressed with the service and accommodations…and best of all, we didn't have to clean up the aftermath!!! We also enjoy family dinner and a movie night. What a wonderful way to spend a Friday night as a family. The evening is enjoyable for all ages; especially when the week's feature is a classic movie from yester-year. As a parent, I was delighted to share a piece of my childhood with my children. I highly recommend taking advantage of this family-friendly event. What a gem, we will definitely be back again, again, and again. The Family Room has really become a part of our lives and weekly calendar.

Home away from home
I have an almost 2 year-old and a four month-old and The Family Room has been such a life saver for me. It has become an extension of our home and definitely the family room or basement that we don't have in our row house.
It's a safe and fun place for my son to play if I need to feed my daughter and everyone there is so kind to us. We particularly enjoy going there in the late afternoon, when we're all a little tired and need a new environment and some welcoming faces. We really feel lucky to have such a great place in our community.

Fun for kids (& a nice break for adults)
My children (ages 5, 3 and almost a year) all love The Family Room (TFR as we affectionately call it). Every day they wake up and ask if we are going there (no kidding). There are age-appropriate toys for everyone and lots of them, so it is a perfect place to meet friends for a playdate. Or if we don't have one scheduled, we love to go meet new friends there. It has never been overcrowded; there are always plenty of toys to go around and space to play. We often go there in the late afternoon if we are entertaining that evening so that our own house stays neat. :-) And there are far, far, far fewer squabbles there than at home or at a friend's house, I think because it is neutral territory.
The classes also seem terrific. I sampled Spanish, French, and yoga at the Grand Opening Celebration and have dropped in for the art class occasionally (with 2 different naptimes, I can't commit to a time each week or I would have signed up for sure!). The owners and employees are gifted with children, as well. They are so patient and it is clear that they all have a special place in their hearts for children. There are COMFORTABLE chairs for adults and I love to sit and sip a coffee (Starbucks and Dunkin' Donuts right down the block) and flip through a magazine or the Post. There are also a multitude of restaurants within 2 blocks (Indian, Thai, American, Irish, pizza, seafood, Belgian, deli) so it makes for a great morning/lunch outing or, as we are doing tonight, a great late-afternoon/dinner outing. We're going to play, then drop-in on the art class, order a pizza to eat there, play some more, then go home and put the kiddos to bed. It's a great place, we love it. Go check it out!
